The reason was not the unwashed plate or cutlery, but the relative lack of bile acid caused by too much food. Bile acids are able to break down certain viruses, especially those with lipoprotein envelopes (yellow fever viruses, herpes viruses etc., while viruses without envelopes are resistant: coxsackie, polio, etc.).
