Dr Lóránd Bertók in the book 500 Greatest Geniuses

Quote from the book:
Lóránd Bertók was born on 16 July 1934 in Debrecen, Hungary. He received his veterinary degree from the University of Veterinary Medicine in Budapest in 1957. He subsequently obtained a PhD in Immunology in 1965 and a Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) degree from the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in 1984.
Academician at the Catholic Academy of Sciences in Washington, DC (USA). He works as a scientific advisor at the Frédéric Joliot-Curie National Institute of Radiobiology and Radiation Health Research in Budapest. He is currently Professor Emeritus in the Department of Microbiology at Semmelweis University of Medicine and Scientific Advisor to Rector Magnificus in Budapest. He was a collaborator of Hans Selye in Montreal, Canada.
With his colleague Prof. Dr. Bertók, he discovered the lipase activity of leptospires and showed the relationship between protein metabolism and immunity (antibody production), as well as the possibility of modifying the species-specific resistance of macroorganisms. He has discovered the role of bile acid deficiency in bacterial (gut) endotoxin uptake (translocation) and in the so-called physico-chemical defence of the organism. He has demonstrated the role of bile acids (the end product of cholesterol metabolism) in various pathological processes (e.g. intestinal syndrome of radiation sickness, surgical shock, hormonal disorders, psoriasis, etc.). New radiodetoxified endotoxin formulations have been developed that may provide protection against endotoxin and various forms of shock (e.g. endotoxin, surgical, radiation, etc.). He has demonstrated a number of immunological effects (e.g. enhancement of natural immunity, endotoxin tolerance, immune adjuvant, etc.) and has demonstrated the beneficial effects of these formulations in clinical trials.
Prof. Dr. Bertók has organised several international conferences, symposia and workshops.
More than 250 scientific articles, author of more than 200 abstracts, numerous book chapters and books, including "Natural Immunity" (Elsevier, Amsterdam-New York, 2005). Prof. Dr. Bertók's work has been cited more than 950 times. His former students have become leaders in Hungarian medicine. He holds 6 patents pending. He has been elected to the board of several biomedical organizations on the basis of his professional merit.
Prof. Dr. Bertók has received numerous awards and honours, including the Széchenyi Prize (the highest Hungarian scientific award) in 2002 and a medal from the President of the Republic of Hungary in 2005.
He is the founder and honorary president of the Hungarian Equestrian Federation's endurance section. In 1993 he was Hungarian champion in endurance, and in 1996 he was awarded the Széchenyi Equestrian Medal. He is listed in several biographical reference books.
