For thousands of years, our ancestors survived by drawing on previously accumulated reserves in times of hardship. Today, we lead very different lifestyles, but our bodies still store up reserves. However, we tend to consume far more calories than we need, and the reserves accumulate not only in the fat under the skin but also in our organs, including the liver. This is not a problem for a while, but later on it can develop into what is called fatty liver. This is why excessive alcohol consumption is harmful: alcohol is very high in calories and the excess is converted into fat by the body.

Fatty liver can therefore be of alcoholic origin, the first stage of alcoholic liver damage. However, in addition to excessive alcohol consumption, hepatitis B and C viruses can also cause fatty liver disease, although these viruses are primarily responsible for damaging liver cells, which triggers inflammation in the surrounding liver tissue.
