What can you do if you have digestive problems after gallbladder surgery?

I had a gallstone operation, after which I had diarrhoea after every meal. I took Gallmet and it was almost completely gone.
'After surgical removal of the gallbladder, our body can no longer store bile, so it continuously drips into the duodenum. As a result, there is not enough bile for proper digestion during meals, causing intestinal bacteria in the colon to produce increased gas, bloating, and possibly constipation or diarrhoea.'

Are you familiar with the symptoms listed above?

We waited for a solution, but are the same problems recurring as before the gallbladder removal?

What can be done to solve unpleasant problems?

There are three possible solutions to such problems:

  • we do nothing, but endure the bloating, diarrhoea, cramps, etc.,
  • eating smaller portions and dieting without the foods we like,
  • take a bile acid capsule before or during a meal to replace the missing bile and get the pleasure of eating again.

"I couldn't do without it. In January 2022 I had my gallbladder removed with stones, and I've been taking it ever since. If I forget to take it and eat fatty food, I run straight to the toilet. I'm perfectly fine taking it!"

Problems after biliary surgery

The listed complaints can be positively influenced by taking daily 1-3 bile acid capsules before meals!

Bile deficiency after gallbladder surgery can lead to other health problems, such as a weak immune system, joint problems, skin problems (allergies, psoriasis, eczema), etc. Click HERE to read more.

Frequently asked questions about digestive problems after gallbladder removal

  • Why can bloating and diarrhoea occur after gallbladder removal?
Removing the gallbladder changes how bile is stored and released into the intestine. Instead of being released from the gallbladder in a concentrated form to coincide with meals, bile flows more continuously into the digestive tract. In some people, this makes fatty foods harder to digest and may cause bloating, abdominal discomfort or diarrhoea.
  • What is post-cholecystectomy syndrome, or PCS?
Post-cholecystectomy syndrome is an umbrella term for abdominal symptoms that persist or develop after gallbladder removal. Symptoms may include bloating, digestive discomfort, difficulty digesting fatty foods, diarrhoea and abdominal pain. PCS may develop in up to 40% of patients after gallbladder removal.
  • Why do my symptoms occur particularly after eating fattier foods?
Without a gallbladder, larger amounts of fat consumed in a single meal may be harder to tolerate. Inadequately digested fat may lead to gas, bloating and diarrhoea. However, diarrhoea after meals may also have other causes, such as the effects of bile acids entering the large intestine.
  •  What can yellowish stools mean after gallbladder removal?
A yellowish stool colour alone does not reveal the cause of the symptoms. If the stool has a greasy sheen, is oily, smells unpleasant and is difficult to flush away, this may suggest impaired fat digestion. Greyish-white, clay-coloured stools are different: they may indicate reduced bile flow and therefore require medical assessment.
  • What changes should I make to my diet if I have diarrhoea or bloating after eating?
Try dividing your daily food intake into smaller portions and reducing the amount of fat you eat in a single meal. Observe which foods, cooking methods and portion sizes trigger your symptoms. Keeping a food diary may help you identify patterns.
  • What are Gallmet bile acid capsules and what do they contain?
Gallmet bile acid capsules are enteric-coated food supplements containing natural bile acids. Their ingredients include freeze-dried ox bile. Bile acids are involved in the digestion and absorption of fats. Before purchasing, check the product’s exact composition, directions for use and warnings.
  • When should Gallmet bile acid capsules be taken?
They should be taken immediately before or during a main meal. Follow the product instructions for dosage and use.
  • When should I see a doctor about digestive problems after gallbladder removal?
If diarrhoea recurs regularly, persists or is accompanied by weight loss, consult your doctor. Seek medical attention promptly if you experience severe or worsening abdominal pain, fever, jaundice, or greyish-white stools and dark urine. These symptoms should not be dismissed as simple discomfort after eating.
