The role of bile acids in the digestion of fats

One of the most important functions of bile acids is to break down fats, dispersing them into tiny particles - breaking down oil and fat. They also activate lipase, the fat digesting enzyme that speeds up the breakdown and absorption of fats/oils in the body. When fatty/oily foods are eaten, a reflex is triggered at the time of chewing, which causes the bile produced in the liver and stored in the gall bladder to be discharged into the duodenum, helping to digest fatty/oily foods as quickly as possible.

Inadequate bile supply due to inadequate fat breakdown and poorly digested food can lead to bloating/fullness and fatigue after meals, which can later lead to abdominal pain. These negative effects can also be prevented by carefully chewing the food you eat, so it is best to avoid eating quickly and greedily. Promoting digestion by supplementing bile acids is very important for patients with gallstones and those who have undergone gall bladder removal surgery, but is also recommended for those who experience any of the symptoms listed after large meals.

The relationship between stress and bile function and digestion

Stress has a significant impact on the whole digestive system, including bile production and excretion. However, in today's world, it is almost impossible to live a stress-free lifestyle. We are stressed when travelling, at work, when shopping, at the post office.

The choleric or bilious person is commonly thought to be angry, nervous, and suddenly out of control. This popular saying also refers to the fact that stress has a negative effect on bile secretion, because bile enters the duodenum through a channel called the Vater papilla. However, when stressed, the smooth muscle part of the duct contracts (spasms) and the mucus in the duct constricts and cannot pass through easily, preventing the bile from reaching the right place where it should be used.

Therefore, when we sit down to eat in a stressed state and eat fatty foods, this contracted Vater's papilla does not allow bile to flow properly. This can have the effect of food makes us bloat. Even though enough bile is produced, it does not reach the duodenum and does not break down fats properly.

What can you do if you often live in a stressful environment?

Retrieved from bile-acid-containing products and bile-diluting, diuretic herbs. It is particularly recommended for people who already have small cholesterol polyps in their gallbladder. These will be the seeds of the gallstone formation that follows.

Immune system support with bile acids

The antiseptic effect of bile acids is due to the fact that they are resistant to various pathogens, also contain toxic substances in the form of fat, which bile acids help to break down. Immune cells are much better at killing macro viruses and bacteria with lipid coatings (e.g. herpes, endotoxins, etc.), the fat-containing skeleton of which has already been partially degraded by bile acids. Thus, by not allowing them to be absorbed, they indirectly but naturally relieve the immune system, contributing to natural resistance and physico-chemical defence.
