Find out the most important facts about bile and its tasks

The main functions of bile and bile acids

What is bile made up of?

Bile is produced in the liver and contains 80% water and 20% solutes. Bile acids make up the majority of the solutes in bile. Bile acids are formed from cholesterol.
Bile also contains bile dye (bilirubin), which gives it its brownish-yellow colour. Its water-insoluble constituents, including cholesterol, are held in solution by bile acids.

The bile duct, unbalanced diet

The bile duct

The bile is collected in small bile ducts and transported through the bile ducts in the liver. The bile ducts merge into a common bile duct, which is then passed through the Vater's papilla into the duodenum. The pancreatic duct also joins the duodenum at the same point.
The gallbladder is connected to the common bile duct by the so-called cystic duct, which is responsible for storing bile.
The gallbladder is a pear-shaped organ, on average 3 x 7 cm in size, which can store about 30-50 ml of concentrated bile and is located under the right lobe of the liver.
The secretion of bile into the intestinal tract and its storage in the gallbladder is mainly regulated by endocrine gland hormones.
Between meals, the bile duct at the level of the Vater papilla is kept closed by the sphincter of Oddi (Oddi-sphincter). The bile produced in the liver is then released into the gallbladder, where it is stored and concentrated about 10-fold.
The hormone released after a meal causes the gallbladder to contract, the sphincter of Oddi to relax and the bile to be discharged into the duodenum.

The physiological role of bile

Bile acids make the fatty constituents of food water soluble and thus play an essential role in the fat digestion and to promote the use of nutrients, including the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins from the intestine.

In addition, the liver makes bile acids from cholesterol by forming cholesterol, and the solubility of cholesterol in bile is ensured by bile acids, helps to excrete cholesterol from the body.
