Conditions with reduced bile acid
When the bile ducts are blocked due to obstruction of the drainage. The salts of bile acids are reabsorbed in the last part of the small intestine and pass to the liver. If the last part of the small intestine is inflamed or surgically removed, the bile salts pass into the large intestine and are excreted in the faeces (biliary diarrhoea). When the amount of bile acids decreases in this way, their concentration in the body also decreases. The breakdown of fats is reduced, resulting in fatty stools. The bile salts also increase the peristalsis of the intestine, causing and aggravating diarrhoea.
