When we replace the bile acids that the body is missing, some of them are reabsorbed in the small intestine and enter the bloodstream, from where they are returned to the liver. This stimulates the liver to produce more bile, which in turn is reabsorbed in the gallbladder. This is called enterohepatic (gut-liver) circulation.

So bile acid ingested from outside can trigger further bile acid production, which in turn breaks down excess cholesterol and also reduces bile reflux.
