The main function of bile is to breakdown of fats and the lower cholesterol levels.
Bile is produced by the liver and collected by the gall bladder, and is made up of cholesterol. Cholesterol cannot be broken down by the body because it is an essentially useful substance. The only way excess cholesterol can be removed is through faecal excretion.
2-5 g of bile acid is produced in the human body every day, but this can be transported up to 10 times from the intestines to the bloodstream, then to the liver, from there to the gall bladder and back to the duodenum.
10-20% of bile acids are passed in the faeces, ridding the body of excess cholesterol.
If there is not enough bile in the intestines, digestion is impaired, fats are not broken down perfectly and excess cholesterol is not excreted in sufficient quantities, but some of it is reabsorbed.
The first symptoms are bloating, aching under the right rib cage and pain in the shoulder blade.
